Obituary

Anna Marie Slattery passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by loved ones, on November 10, 2023, after a long, full life. She was born on September 12, 1940 in Northhampton, Massachusetts, to Fred and Anna Maria (Polito) Hodgkins. Childhood with her five siblings was spent at the Fairgrounds and working in the cucumber fields. Anna met and married a Sailor, Ted Slattery, in 1964. Together they had three children: Steve, Kim, and Scott. They moved to Virginia Beach in 1968 and took up permanent residence in Aragona Village. In her younger years, Anna worked as a switchboard operator and a bookkeeper at Kollmorgen. She later went on to work as a school lunch lady and manager for 30 years.

She will be remembered as a tiny but powerful force, full of sarcasm, witty remarks, silly dances, and perfectly timed facial expressions. Anna was always generous, would take anyone in, and wanted to feed everyone who crossed her path. She loved her cup of coffee in the morning, reading the paper and doing her crosswords, soaking up the sun, and watching her programs while eating her goodies and drinking a Coke. Her greatest joy in life was her three granddaughters, her sweetie pies, for which she never missed a birthday, shopping trip, school recital, award ceremony, graduation, etc.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years: Ted Slattery, three brothers: Eddie Hodgkins, Bobby Hodgkins, and Billy Hodgkins, and her youngest son: Scott Slattery.

Her memory and legacy will continue on with her family. She is survived by two siblings: Irene Rossi (Phil Sullivan) and Buddy Hodgkins (Joan Hodgkins), two children: Steve Slattery and Kim Hewitt, three grandchildren: Kelly Gill (Zach Gill), Amanda Hewitt, and Melissa Hewitt, and two great grandchildren, Dylan and Lillian Gill. She will also be missed by her extended family members, her lifelong friend, Mildred Sellers, as well as her Taldan Avenue family. The family is eternally grateful for her team of four nurses, who were her friends and caregivers throughout her last days: Daisy, Tiese, Tinker, and Khania.

We love you, we miss you, and we can't wait to see you!
