Obituary

Barbara Jean Harris Aarons, "Cookie", was born to Ruth Harris and Louis Miller in Bluffton, South Carolina on July 14, 1947. After her mother passed away, she was raised by extended family. At some point, her Aunt Mary Lovett stepped in to raise her and relocated her to New York. She also shared a special relationship with her Aunt Regina Bligen and Uncle Paul Miller.

Barbara graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School. She also graduated from Masonville University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

Barbara married Winston Aaron in 1980. During their marriage they purchased a house on Long Island, New York, where she helped raise four stepchildren. After their separation, she moved to New Jersey.

Barbara had a 20 year career with the United Negro College Fund. She filled the job of Administrative Assistant to the President, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. She assisted with many confidential and complex matters. She always encouraged young men and women to get a college education.

In 1999, Barbara relocated and settled in Virginia Beach, She joined First Baptist Church of Norfolk where she was a faithful member. She sang in the choir and was a member of several ministries.

Due to declining health after her diagnosis of sarcoidosis, a double lung transplant was required in 2004. Barbara had her second chance at life and lived life to the fullest.

Barbara enjoyed traveling immensely which included many trips throughout the United States and the Caribbean. She also traveled to Africa twice, which fulfilled a life long dream. She was an avid gardener, great thrift shopper and cat lover.

Barbara was a part of many organizations. She was a member of the International Black Woman's Congress, Union Baptist Senior Ministries, AARP Local Chapter. A Red Hatters Society and The Birthday Club just to name a few. A proud moment for Barbara was meeting President Obama after working tirelessly on hi campaign.

During her life journey, Barbara embraced and maintained many strong and lasting friendships. Their love, companionship and support helped her through many difficult times.

Barbara leaves a host of friends and family to rejoice in here home-going and to keep her precious memories alive.

If you have ever called her, shared a meal with her, traveled with her, worked with her, lived with her, encouraged her, laughed with her, took her to the doctor, visited her in the hospital, prayed with her, prayed for her, loved her…..BARBARA thanks you!
