Benjamin
Barnes
December 29, 1934 – June 1, 2023
Benjamin Barnes was born on December 29, 1934, to Rosanna and Vinsom Barnes in Elm City, NC.
He transitioned peacefully with family by his side on June 1, 2023.
Benjamin was preceded in death by his son Vernon Barnes, his parents, and siblings Joseph Barnes (Mollie), Leroy Barnes, Mattie Mercer, and Luther Barnes (Sara). He is survived by Carrie, his loving wife of 68 years, sons Ervin of Richmond, VA, Charlie Knight (Tanya) of Fairfax, VA, Michael (Song) of Virginia Beach, VA, Steven of Richmond, VA, Jeffery (Sharon) of Virginia Beach, VA; one daughter, Judith Willis of Richmond, VA; sister, Earlene Brown of Virginia Beach, VA; over 15 grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives. The family extends a special thank you to grandchildren Mike Jr. and Kimberly for their devoted care during his illness.
Affectionately known as BB, he spent his early years farming tobacco to support his mother and siblings until marrying Carrie in 1958. BB and his growing family left Elm City and settled in Virginia. He immediately found work at a Norfolk service station then Sears & Roebuck, where he dedicated over 30 years. BB was a hard worker whose children often heard him say "God bless the child who's got his own" and indeed he did. He repaired washers and dryers and drove cabs at night to provide for his wife and children. Our loving husband, father and grandfather loved family and could easily be found at gatherings with a cigar, cooking, sharing drinks, cracking wise jokes, laughing, and flashing that smile. BB always dressed sharp, liked fishing–but hated the worms, loved sweets, and could stir up conversation with strangers at the store and neighbors alike.
BB will be deeply missed by all who knew him and are left to carry on his memory and legacy.
