Obituary

Betheye Elizabeth Powell Johnson was born to the late Deacon Thomas O. Powell, SR and Addie R. Powell on October 30, 1949. Betheye grew up in Chesapeake and Portsmouth, Virginia. Betheye graduated from Cradock High School in 1967. She attended Temple University and graduated from Howard University with a degree in journalism in 1972. Betheye accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age. She was a member of Saint Luke Holiness Church which was associated with Tabernacle Of God's Holiness Church of Divine Healing. Betheye enjoyed organizing and participating in many church programs. Betheye was very active in several organizations while she attended Howard University including the Newspaper Club, Photography Club and Journalism Club. She interviewed many people who were involved in the Civil Rights Movement including Angela Davis, Stokeley Carmichael and Maya Angelou. She also interviewed the Tuskegee Airmen. Betheye enjoyed photography and started painting while she attended Howard University. After graduating from Howard University she worked for the Journal and Guide Newspaper as a journalist and photographer. Betheye was united in holy matrimony on June 4, 1972 to Juanelle Johnson. Betheye and Juanelle started Faith Temple Holiness Church in 1975. Betheye was licensed as a missionary in 1987. Betheye was one of the founding members of the Tabernacle Young People's Organization (TYPO). She organized and directed the Acapella Chorale for many years. In 1988 Betheye and her good friend Heddy Sykes started Tabernacle Of God Christian School. The school fostered an educational start for many young children. The school operated for 8 years. Betheye loved arts and crafts. She was a master painter, sculpture and seamstress. Betheye was a patient, kind hearted person. She was an unofficial mentor to many. She very frugal and did not like to waste or throw away anything. She was a strong willed and passionate especially when it came to educating children. Betheye was an avid reader of the bible and faithfully had devotions every morning. Betheye leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 42 years Juanelle. 4 children Asa J. Johnson, Charisse B. Johnson, Slater J. Johnson and Goluia B. Johnson all of Chesapeake, VA. Her mother Addie R. Powell of Portsmouth, VA , one brother Linwood J. Powell, SR (Faye) of Suffolk, VA, four sisters Natalie Powell Cary of Virginia Beach, Geneva R. White of Newport News, Maria N. Powell and Carolyn J. Powell of Portsmouth Virginia. One sister in-law Candice Gaines (James) of Chesapeake, 2 brother in-laws Melvin Johnson of Portsmouth, and Romero Johnson (Tish) of Virginia Beach. Three aunts Rosetta Evans of Sedley and Janie Gary, of Boykins and Elnora Mason (Carroll) of Stoney Creek,Virginia. One uncle David Johnson of Chesapeake. Four nieces, ten nephews, and a host of great nieces, great nephews cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her son Saul B. Johnson, her father Thomas O. Powell, SR, and her brother Thomas O. Powell, JR
