Carl Anthony Davenport Sr. was born on July 5, 1964 to Talbert Llewellyn Davenport (deceased) and Isabella Davenport. He was born in Honolulu on the Island of Oahu in beautiful Hawaii. Carl spent much of his early life on military bases and as a child moved from Hawaii to South Carolina to North Carolina and eventually to Baltimore. Spending much of his earlier life on military bases molded him into someone with a great deal of respect for organization and authority. As a youngster he was active and spent much of his time enjoying the outdoors. He was often found swimming, fishing and playing soccer. At one time he was even given the nickname Pelé after the famous soccer player and number one league scorer in history. Carl graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1982.
Carl went on to have an ironworks business with his brother Talbert (deceased), "C & T Metals". Carl was
a skilled worker and craftsman whose work can be seen throughout Baltimore and Hampton Roads Virginia.
On March 7, 1981, after studying the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses Carl dedicated his life to Jehovah by water baptism. As a servant of Jehovah he volunteered his time to teach others about the Bible and even did this full-time as a regular pioneer spending 90 plus hours a month teaching others about the Bible and the God he served. At nineteen, he was appointed as a Ministerial Servant and later progressed to serving as an Elder in Baltimore; he served the needs of his brothers and sisters in several congregations. He extended himself for the friends.
Carl met the love of his life Shawn Ruff at an assembly of Jehovah's Witnesses. Later they wed on March 28, 1987. Carl and Shawn went on to have four beautiful children that they raised to serve Jehovah. Coming from a family of watermen and spending his early life on an island Carl loved the ocean and activities associated with it. He swam, bodysurfed, and always fished. After relocating his family to Virginia Beach, there wasn't a week he didn't spend almost every other day 'throwing his line out' as he would call it. Along with his love of Jehovah and being a 'fisherman of men', Carl also shared his love of the ocean and water sports with his family often taking his wife and children on extended outings to different ocean fronts and piers in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Maryland. No matter the weather he liked to be around Jehovah's creation and had great appreciation for our home, the earth.
Carl is survived by his wife Shawn of 28 years and four children; Carl Jr., Timothy, Rachel, and Chelsea. Also his mother, Isabella Davenport. One brother, Kenneth Davenport (Onitsha) and two sisters, Joan and Joy Davenport. He leaves behind a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces, and an even larger spiritual family of brothers and sisters. We anxiously await his resurrection to see a perfect Carl return to a paradise earth (John 5: 28 & 29).
