Clifford R.
Rouson
October 30, 1937 – February 21, 2022
Clifford (Cliff) R. Rouson, age 84, was born in 1937 to Lemuel J. and Lillie Mae Alexander-Rouson in Columbia, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 of his 11 siblings (Annie-Mae, Calvin, Naomi, Rebecca, Dennis, Malvina (aka Mary), Harold, Hubert, Zilder & Lemuel, Jr. (aka Garfield).
Since he was smaller in stature than his siblings, he was affectionately called "Bub" or "Uncle Bub" by his loved ones. Cliff loved his hats and music. If you knew him, you knew that Cliff would not be seen without his hats, and without his music nearby. His love for music began as a teenager when he joined a group of friends to play various instruments. During his adult years, he spent his spare time in the basement with his guitars, harmonicas, organ, and various music books from Johnny Cash & Chuck Berry which made his basement look like a music studio. There is where he would often be found playing his favorite 8-track tapes, & music albums of either B.B. King or John Lee Hooker's "Hobo Blues" repeatedly.
Cliff grew up and lived in North Carolina where he met and fell in love with Elizabeth Mayo, whom he wed on 12-15-1957. This lovely union produced three children. After the birth of their 1 st child, Clifford moved his family to NY in 1961.
There he was employed for the New York City Transit Authority as a bus operator for 20 years, until retiring in 1989. During those years he also looked for opportunities to be an entrepreneur and found one when he realized that there was no fish market in his neighborhood. So, on his days off, he would take his red pickup truck filled with fresh fish & vegetables and sell to his neighbors. This eventually led to him opening his own fish store, "Liberty Fish Market" during the 1970's.
Cliff was always interested in the Bible and curious about the condition of his dead loved ones. His curiosity grew even more after his wife began to study with Jehovah's Witnesses, so he decided to study the Bible. Faithful Brothers including Ozzie Rice, Joe Wiggins, & Eugene Telfair taught him Bible truths using the Bible publication, "The Truth that Leads to Eternal Life". The answers he found moved him to dedicate his life to Jehovah. He couldn't keep what he learned to himself, so he began telling others of Jehovah's promises. Later, on 04-24-1973, he was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. His progress in the Van Wyck congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses became obvious to all and eventually he was appointed as an elder. Along with his wife and children, they attended Christian meetings and assemblies.
In 1991 he moved his family to Virginia and immediately began associating with the Lynnhaven Congregation. There he found a new spiritual family as the members all rallied around him and his family to care for his ailing wife, Elizabeth. He remained faithful to this union for 41 years until her death in 1998.
Later, Cliff met another love of his life Constance (Connie) Hamilton, and they were married on 12-18-1999. Together they enjoyed traveling, dining, going to Christian meetings & assemblies, and spending lots of quality time. As his health issues worsened, Connie remained by Cliff's side until he died peacefully at their home on 02-21-2022.
Cliff will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife, Connie; children, Darlene (Darren), Reginald (Lorna), & Vernette; step-daughters, Denise & Marcia; grandchildren, Avette (Dell), Michael (Shannon), Maurice (Jenetta), Travis (Ashley), Courtney (Russell), Chelsea, Cameron, Devin (Denene), Alyssa & Joseph; great-grandchildren, Mason, Charles, Madison, Jonas, Aubrey, Kyrie, Karter, Alexander, Isaac, Trevor, Latheena, Taylor, Princeton & Catalina; his brother, Herbert Rouson, along with his wife Pearl; a host of nephews & nieces, grandnephews & nieces; many spiritual brothers, sisters & children.
