Dorothy Y
Johnson
August 14, 2020
Dorothy Y. Johnson of Virginia Beach, VA fell asleep in death Friday August 14, 2020.
It is with deep sorrow the family announces Dorothy's passing, but we will continue honoring her with fond and loving memories.
Dorothy was born and raised in New York City to the late John and Pearl Young. She was the sister to Vernice, Hazel, John, and Robert. She later became the wife to Emory E. Johnson, becoming the in-law to Aileen, Royal and Jewel, who preceded her in death, as well as Deloris, Wallace-Fatsy, Marlene and Robert who survive her.
Dorothy and Emory began their own family. She was the mother of Denise Eley, Dino Johnson, Davita Morado and grandmother to her only grandson, Enrique Mendoza. She also leaves behind her sister in-law Joyce Young, nephew Sean, niece Andrea, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family of Jehovah Witnesses.
As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, she dedicated her life to Jehovah and was baptized in 1963, she continued to educate others in God's word throughout her life. She was a faithful servant of Jehovah, who regularly fed at God's table, spiritually extending herself to others to impart spiritual truth. She was fond of God's word and strongly believed in the resurrection hope as Jesus promised in the Scriptures at John 11:17-27 and Acts 24:15. She always talked about Jehovah to others and spent a lot of time in different avenues of the ministry helping others and faithfully served Jehovah until her death.
Most of Dorothy's life consisted of educating others. She was a teacher's assistant for the New York City School Board and assigned to an elementary school in the Bronx. Later, she got a job at the Learning Center teaching minority students about their Hispanic, Native and African heritage. The Learning Center was designed to replicate a Native Taino village, an African village and Spain, and Dorothy guided students through each section, explaining artifacts and covering the history of each area. Eventually, the center lost its funding, but Dorothy's desire to learn and teach others did not stop there.
In 1977, Dorothy moved to the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, where she continued her life, religious teachings, discovering new family members and making new friends. She became an administrative secretary for the City of Virginia Beach Public Works until her retirement in 2009.
We are thankful for all the love, support and care she has given us throughout her life and all the wonderful teachings she provided. Her beautiful memory will live on in those of us that were closest to her. She will be missed, but never forgotten…
