Henry Hopkins was born August 27, 1928, in Bethel, NC to the late Henry Hopkins, Sr. and Millie Robinson Hopkins. Henry attended Pitt County Schools in Bethel, NC.
Henry moved to Norfolk, Va. in 1948 and immediately began working for Colonial Stores, stocking shelves. He worked there until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1953, as a Seaman Apprentice. He served his country for 2 years, 1953-1955. After his enlistment he started work at Big Star Grocery Stores in the produce department, where he later became Produce Manager. Henry retired from Big Star after 45 years.
After retiring he worked as a school Crossing Guard for Portsmouth Public Schools. He enjoyed this job because it allowed him to talk with teachers, parents and most of students.
He had several passions in life, Soul Music being one of his favorite, he enjoyed music all his life, with James Brown being one of his favorite musicians. Fishing and watching westerns were his other favorite things.
Henry was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Glennie. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Brown and Margaret Hopkins. Brothers Willie Mack, David Hopkins, Issac Hopkins, John Lee Hopkins and John T. Bullock.
Henry leaves to cherish his memories: daughters, Glennie Barham of Spring Valley, NY, Mary Ellsworth (LeRoy) of Va. Beach, VA and Sandra L. Bennett (Julius) of San Antonio, TX.; one son Milton Barham (Jeanette) of Philadelphia, PA., five grandchildren: Annquette Mackey, Roosevelt Barham, Yolonda Barham, all of Spring Valley, NY, LeRoy Ellsworth, III (Samaria) of Va Beach, VA and LaTasha Spencer of South Carolina, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Henrys memories will also be cherished by his loving and caring companion, Ms. Minne Pace, whom he affectionately called "his baby". Minnie was a godsend to our family caring for Henry in last years of life.
