Obituary

Smith, James "Billy", MSgt. USMC (Ret.), born in Norfolk, VA, currently a resident of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away at home on August 5, 2020.  He was preceded in death by his sisters, Carolyn Ann Brown and Pamela Smith.  He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Wanda Smith; mother, Marie Smith; three sons, Jamel D. Smith, Sr., Rashad Q. Smith, Jarreth L. Smith; two step-daughters, Tenesha and DeShara; eight beloved grandchildren, Tavian, Keanu, Harlem, Phoenix, Jamel, Jaiden, Carlo, Cassius; four devoted, loving and supporting brothers and sisters, Calvin Smith, Keith "Larry" Hunter, Renee Smith, Cynthia Foster; and extended family, friends, and fellow Marines.  Master Sergeant Smith enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1974.  His extensive military history includes conducting patrols and operations while stationed in Okinawa Japan.
His extensive military history includes conducting patrols and operations while stationed in the Okinawa, Japan; Refrigeration Mechanic, Utilities Chief.  His service awards include Rifle Expert Badge 6th Award, Pistol Marksman Badge, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Letter of Appreciation, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Letter of Recognition, Certificate of Commendation, Navy Commendation Medal, and Meritorious Unit Citation. Master Sergeant Smith served in the ROTC at Maury High School (Norfolk, Va.).

Billy was a loving husband, father and grandfather.  He loved the game of basketball and was not quiet about his jumper.  He was meticulous about his lawn and even said once, "I just love cutting grass!".  He loved cars and anyone who knew him during his years at Maury High School remembers the "Travelin' Javelin".  He was a hard, but fair and pliable without breaking and without question he was a mentor to all.
