John Russell Ward affectionately known as "Billy", was born on June 16, 1943, in Princess Anne County, Virginia to the late Beatrice E. Sawyer and raised in love by the late Amos and Essie Ward. Billy joined Mt. Zion AME Church at an early age, where he was a faithful member for most of his life. He graduated from (High School) and was employed by (the City of Virginia Beach) for many years. He enjoyed playing cards and reading. Billy took pride in encouraging the younger generation and was a mentor to a great deal of young men who crossed his path.

In his life, he touched many lives and made many memories Even as his health began to decline, his faith never faltered. And on June 13, 2022 Billy entered into heavens gates. Left to cherish those precious moments in time are his two sons John Hines and Calvin Ward. His brother David Sawyer Jr. (Anna) and sister Peggy Carter (Ronald) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family members, and friends.
