Obituary

Fight the good fight of Faith, Lay hold on eternal life where unto thou hast called and has professed a good profession before many.

Vilma Mercedes Barnett a.k.a. Pleasant, aka P was born to Lucille and Theophilus Barnett at Castleton District Balaclava Saint Elizabeth Jamaica on July 14, 1947. She attended the St.Gabriel's Catholic Academy. After graduation, she relocated to Kingston where she gained employment at the Jamaica Omnibus Company where she worked for several years. After leaving JOS, she became a trac warden with the Kingston and Saint Andrew corporation, a branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

In 1990, she migrated to the United States where she resided in Brooklyn, New York. There, she became an active member of the Parish, St. Matthew's Catholic Church. She was the past President of the Rosary Society and a member of the choir. Vilma worked with the special needs community for Catholic Charities until retirement. She then relocated to Virginia Beach, Virginia. Even after retirement, she wasn't done yet. She knew she wanted to continue her service to her community. As an ardent supporter of people with special needs, she gained employment as a Paraprofessional with the Virginia Beach Public School, where she made her mark at Princess Anne High School. There, she eventually acquired her second well deserved retirement.

In 2019, Vilma lost her leg due to a laceration. Unfortunately, poor circulation led to the hard decision to amputate. Vilma didn't let that stop her from her call to serve. She opened her home and life to several displaced children as a foster parent even with her new-found disability. She eventually adopted La'tea and Bethiel Barnett.

During her lifetime, Vilma acquired various skills, some of which are sewing, crocheting, cooking, and developed a passion for volunteering. In her youth, she was an enthusiastic sports fan who enjoyed playing Netball and Volleyball. She also occasionally watched Cricket at the Sabina Park and Maxfield Park Cricket Clubs. In the early 2000's Vilma was invited to be a member of the exclusive Lions Club, Crown Heights Chapter 20K1 in Brooklyn New York, where she was able to continue her volunteer services. One thing about Vilma, she had a passion for serving her community.

While visiting family in Florida, she became a member of a senior group at the Pentecostal Tabernacle called Sarsaparilla.

Vilma is survived by her four biological children, Nadine, Marlon, Adrian, and Jannique and two adopted children Latea and Bethiel, 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; Sister, Cherene Barnett Medley, Nieces, Nephews, and many other family and friends.
